Located on the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, south of Playa Bejuco and north of Playa Coyote, Playa San Miguel rests quietly waiting for vacationers. San Miguel stretches over 3 kilometers of beautiful, under populated beach. The beach offers many great surf spots and magnificent sunsets.

Playa San Miguel and the surrounding areas remain unaffected by mass tourism and overcrowding letting the land create its own private community. Commercialization has yet to come to Playa San Miguel, but neighboring areas like; Montezuma, Punta Islita, and Carrillo are already well developed.

The roads leading towards San Miguel are in poor conditions, but create a feeling of entering uncharted land. The rough roads also allow the San Miguel area to be left in a relatively secluded condition which can make for a nice visit.

The Playa San Miguel road stretches with the beach, and features two inns with restaurants, a butterfly garden, and beach homes. Many of the owners of the beach homes are rarely there and some of them can be rented by the inns.

On the beach you can find a restaurant called Ran Cho Ja Villa. They serve fresh fish, along with typical beach meals that can be enjoyed with great cocktails while watching the sunset.

Further north on the beach road lie two inns: the Scorpion Volador (Flying Scorpion) and The Blue Pelican. Each offers rooms, a restaurant, and a bar.

The Flying Scorpion has rooms starting at $45 plus tax per night, which also includes a complimentary breakfast. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner offering international and local cuisines. The open air bar offers great top shelf drinks along with great atmosphere for evening activities. This inn also offers a weekly acupuncturist, and also has two beach houses available for rent.

The Blue Pelican features rooms starting at $30 a night, which include a breakfast.  The restaurant offers lunch, dinner, and a full bar. Daily activities such as surfing trips, fishing trips, kayaking trips and horseback riding can all be arranged through the hotel.

Also located near Playa San Miguel is a condominium community. This condo community located just minutes from the beach, lies on the main coastal road. A few of the condos are still for sale.

The Arca de Noe is located a little further south outside Playa San Miguel and houses a restaurant, bar, pool, and many rooms for its visitors. The room prices start at $70 during the high season and $60 during the low season. Beach and land activities may also be arranged such as: horseback riding, bike rentals, kayak tours, and sport fishing.

Hans or “Juan”, as he is known in the area, has lived in Puerto Coyote for 15 years and knows the area very well.
